Macbeth Clan history

The ancient ancestral home of the MacBeth family is located on the western coast of Scotland and the desolate Hebrides islands. The MacBeth name is derived from the names Macbeth and Bethune, or Beaton. During the Middle Ages, the MacBeth and Bethune families served as hereditary physicians to the Chiefs of Macdonald and practiced medicine on the Isles. Over time, their names merged into the single surname of Beaton in English. The MacBeths were primarily concentrated in Islay and Mull, while the Beatons were concentrated in Skye.

Legend has it that the MacBeth Clan’s progenitor can be traced back to the Isle of Islay. Macbeth (Mac Bethad mac Findláich) (1005-1057), the High Steward of Moray, is said to be the ancestor of this Clan. With his mother being a daughter of King Kenneth III and his marriage to Grudoch, a daughter of the son of King Kenneth III, MacBeth had a strong claim to the Scottish throne, just like King Duncan I. In 1040, MacBeth challenged Duncan and emerged victorious in battle, thus assuming the throne.

MacBeth, also known as the last Celtic king of Scotland, ruled from 1040 to 1057 until his death in battle against the future king Malcolm of the Canmore dynasty.

His name is most famously associated with the Shakespearean drama that bears his name. However, actors often refer to the play as “the Scottish play” due to the belief that uttering the name brings bad luck.

The Macbeth Family motto is “conjunction vertuti fortuna” which translates to “fortune is allied to bravery”
