Johnstone Clan history
Johnstone: The name “Johnstone” has a long history in Scotland, with the earliest recorded use as a surname dating back to 1174 by John of Johnstone in Annadale, Dumfrieshire. In 1296, Sir John of Johnstone of Dumfries swore allegiance to King Edward I of England. While Perth was referred to as St Johnston and an area in East Lothian was known as Jonystoun, it was the Johnstones of the Western Borders who emerged as the most influential group in Scotland. During the Civil War, the Clan Johnstone supported King Charles I. In 1633, King Charles I recognized this loyalty by granting the Johnstone chief the title of lordship. By the 1700s, the Clan Chief of the Johnstones had risen in status to become the Earl of Annadale and Secretary of State.
The family motto is “Nunquam non paratus” which translates to “Never unprepared”.
Ewans tips for styling
There are many ways to style the modern Johnstone tartan however our recommendation would be a navy tweed jacket. With these darker colours in the tartan it will make the jacket pop as well as a black prince Charlie which would look very smart. Ancient Johnstone looks good with an ocean petrol blue tweed jacket
We also recommend that you match the colour of your flashes to the colour of your tie wither that be a Johnstone tartan tie or a plain colour such as a yellow tie
