MacPherson Clan history
The MacPherson family can trace their roots back to the ancient Picts, a Scottish people. The name MacPherson is derived from the Gaelic forms Mac a’ Phearsain and Mac a Phearsoin, meaning “son of the parson.” It was the surname of several ecclesiastical families in Scotland and is descended from Gille Chattan, the Chief of the Clan Chattan. Gille Chattan can be traced back to Feachar the Long, King of Lorn, who passed away in 697 AD. The Clan originally held territories in Stratthnairn, Strathdearn, and Badenoch, where they vied for leadership of the Clan Chattan with the MacKintoshes, who also claimed descent from Gille Chattan through a female heiress.
The surname MacPherson was first found in Inverness, where they served as hereditary keepers of the sacred stone of St. Catan and held prominent positions within the Clan Chattan. The MacPhersons are sometimes referred to as the Clan Mhuirich, meaning “the children of Muredach,” after an early Chief of the Clan named Duncan (the Parson). Duncan was imprisoned alongside the Lord of the Isles following the Battle of Harlaw in 1411.
The MacPherson Family motto is “touch not the cat bot a glove” which translates to “touch not the cat without a glove”
