Black watch history
In 1746, a ban was implemented to prohibit individuals from wearing tartan unless they were part of the military. This ban was instigated by King George the second, who felt threatened by the Scottish clan chiefs and aimed to diminish their influence. Tartan was considered a symbol of their power. To prevent any potential Jacobite uprising, regiments of soldiers were stationed on the hills. These soldiers wore kilts made of black watch tartan, which eventually led to the regiment being named after it. The colours of this tartan are blue, green, and black, chosen to help the soldiers blend into their surroundings and avoid detection by the Jacobite’s. Although primarily a military tartan, it is also commonly worn by individuals who do not have a specific family tartan.
