Robertson Clan history
Robertson: The Robertsons, also known as Clan Donnachaidh (children of Duncan), were descendants of the Celtic Earls of Atholl, who themselves hailed from the line of the kings of Dalriada. ‘Stout Duncan’ was a small landowner and clan chief in Highland Perthshire during the early 1300s. While the clan displayed loyalty to the Bruce and Stewart royal dynasties, they also gained a reputation as raiders and feuding in medieval Scotland. The change in name can be traced back to the fourth chief of Clann Dhonnchaidh, Robert Riabhach (Grizzled) Duncanson. It was Robert who pursued and brought to justice the murderers of King James I in 1437. The Robertsons participated in both the 1715 and 1745 Jacobite Uprisings. Throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries, the Robertson Chiefs resisted displacing their fellow clansmen in favor of more profitable sheep.
The Robertson family motto is ‘Garg ‘n uair dhuisgear’ which translates to “fierce when roused”.
