Forbes Clan history

The name Forbes traces its origins back to the ancient Scottish people known as the Picts. The Forbes family resided in the lands of Forbes in Aberdeenshire, a historic county in northeastern Scotland. The family’s history can be traced back to before the year 1000 AD.

According to legend, the founder of the Clan, Oconochar, defeated a bear in order to establish his residence in the area. The earliest recorded mention of the name Forbes in this region dates back to Duncan de Forbeys, who received a land grant around 1272 from King Alexander III. Another notable figure, John de Fernboys, pledged allegiance to King Edward I of England in 1296. Additionally, William of Forbace served as a canon in Aberdeen in 1464.

The Forbes surname was first discovered in Aberdeenshire, specifically at Pitscottie, which was later renamed “the Braes of Forbes.”

The Forbes Family motto is “grace meguide” which translates to “it is gods grace that leads us”

Ewans tips for styling

Forbes tartan is very similar to Lamont tartan the only difference being a black strip next to white

There are many ways to style the modern Forbes tartan however our recommendation would be a navy tweed jacket. With these darker colours in the tartan it will make the jacket pop as well as a black prince Charlie which would look very smart.

We also recommend that you match the colour of your flashes to the colour of your tie wither that be a Forbes tartan tie or a plain colour such as a green tie
