Buchanan clan history

The ancient Pictish-Scottish family that was the first to use the name Buchanan resided in the vast lands of Buchanan in Stirlingshire, where this distinguished Clan held extensive territories since ancient times. While many present-day members of the Clan Buchanan can trace their ancestry back to McAlpin, the individual who initially established the name of Buchan was Anselan O’Kyan, the son of the King of Ulster around 1016.

It is widely believed that the Buchanan’s of Auchmar were granted lands bordering Loch Lomond by King Malcolm II in recognition of their services against the Danes. Historical records indeed confirm that Walter de Buchanan received a land grant in Auchmarr in 1373. Additionally, Maurice Buchanan served as treasurer to Princess Margaret of France during that period.

The surname Buchanan was originally discovered in Lennox. In Gaelic, “both-chanain” translates to “the seat of the canon,” indicating a possible ecclesiastical origin. The Clan derived its name from the extensive lands of Buchanan in Stirlingshire, where they had significant territories since ancient times. The earliest reference to the name placed an individual in Stirling (now part of the modern Central region) where, in an early document, a Dominus Absolone de Buchkan was a witness to a charter in 1224.

“The original name of this location was Inchcaileoch, derived from an island in Loch Lomond. The origin of this name remains uncertain; however, the family who adopted it due to an early grant of the lands bearing the name descended from Anselan, an Irish native who is believed to have settled here in the 11th century.”

The Buchanan Family motto is “clarior hinc honos” which translates to “brighter hence the honour”
